Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In order to approach this fine collection of works by Philip Glass for the screen, you must not only have a strong liking for Glass and/or minimalism in general, but also you must dispense with the idea that Glass' music works as dramatic film scoring. Glass does succeed in his scoring for certain types of picture--those that perhaps approach the realm of post-modern fine art, including various montage sequences (the acclaimed Koyaanisqatsi) or indeed silent movies, but with any other type of film the scoring cannot provide or accentuate the drama and it becomes merely a sort of aural wallpaper. Glass does exactly the opposite of what a film composer would normally do--he writes very long cues instead of very short ones. This can be appealing for certain types of film (such as Kundun) but for others it can fight the picture, rather than add to it. Putting this aside, the resulting collection is extremely satisfying in its quantity of sounds. Glass certainly has validity in experimental film; his use of repetition in its hypnotic effect on the audience transforms the mood slowly. As a serious film composer one could argue that there are many others who don't need to provoke such extreme reactions (Jerry Goldsmith or Bernard Herrman for example).--Dominic Sewell

4.0 out of 5 stars Good budget intro to Glass' film music, 9 Jan 2002
By A Customer
You can see reviews of the individual items of music in this box elsewhere, I'm just reviewing it as a whole.

With 3 complete soundtracks, 1 cd culled from a double cd and a fifth cd of various tracks with 3 newly released tracks, this box set would fall between all the stools you could care to mention, were it not so cheap - cheap enough to appeal to the committed fan who has a lot of this material already and to the new fan who wants to try a sizable chunk of new music at a reduced price.

Ideally I would have liked to have seen a bigger set (10 cds, perhaps, like the other Nonesuch Records sets) to allow something from every part of Glass' soundtrack spectrum to shine. Meantime, this will do nicely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glass works..., 28 Nov 2005
I'm a big fan of Philip Glass and this collection has not disappointed in any way. I must confess that I hadn't realised how much film music he'd written, and I certainly haven't seen any of these films. In fact, despite having several of his other albums, I found this purely by chance because some of the music was featured on the Jim Carrey film 'The Truman Show'.

Some have said that Glass is not an ideal film score composer. They may be right. His music is not the kind that just fades into the background, as good film music should. It's a constant surge of repeated themes, growing and changing all the time. The orchestration is complex and you'll find something new each time you listen.

If you liked 'The Concerto Project vol 1' or 'Glassworks', you'll almost certainly liked this selection, and at this price for five CDs, it's got to be worth buying.
